The Montenegrin Electricity Distribution System has begun work on the construction of the 35/10 kV “Novi Ulcinj” substation, whose total value, including the cost of constructing three 35 kV and seven 10 kV cable lines, amounts to approximately two million euros. The infrastructure importance of the new substation is particularly evident given the multi-year trend of increasing numbers of customers and electricity consumption in the Municipality of Ulcinj, especially during the tourist season.
The construction of this facility is expected to directly improve the quality of electricity supply for 3,073 customers in the areas of Pinješ, Nova Mahala, Metriz, Prisan, and the Old Town, as well as at the Albatros, Mediteran, and Holegro hotels. A better electricity supply is also expected for 5,527 customers in the central urban area, as the 35/10 kV “Grad” substation will be relieved of load; for years, it has operated under overload conditions during the peak season.
The project will also resolve the summer overloading of the overhead line from the 110/35 kV “Kodre” substation to the 35/10 kV “Grad” substation, caused by uncontrolled construction along the route of the aforementioned line.
It is important to emphasise that this facility is an essential infrastructure prerequisite for the further development of tourism in the Municipality of Ulcinj and for the now-certain increase in hotel capacity. It will also create opportunities to develop the 10 kV network and connect new individual and residential-commercial buildings.
“Novi Ulcinj” will have an installed capacity of 2 × 8 MVA, with a total of five 35 kV bays, while the 10 kV switchgear will have 13 bays, eight of which will be outgoing feeders. The substation will be equipped with state-of-the-art integrated microprocessor-based protection and control systems. The substation will be controlled locally, with remote control from the dispatch centre also possible in the future.
The contractor is “Energomontaža” AD Beograd, and completion is scheduled for 31 December of this year.
In addition to the construction of the aforementioned facility and its associated network, investments totalling €1.4 million are planned this year and next for the construction of new cable lines, as well as the construction of new 10/0.4 kV substations worth €260,000 and the refurbishment of 22 existing substations, valued at approximately €300,000. The refurbishment of the 35/10 kV substations “Velika plaža 1”, “Velika plaža 2” and “Grad” is also planned, with approximately €200,000 to be invested.
Investments in the Municipality of Ulcinj, as well as in other Montenegrin municipalities, demonstrate CEDIS’s determination to modernise and develop the electricity distribution system in order to provide our customers with the best possible service.
